I wanna hang a map of the world in my house. Then I’m gonna put pins into all the locations that I’ve traveled to. But first, I’m gonna have to travel to the top two corners of the map so it won’t fall down.

I just give a congratulation to wikipedia, a very good project of encyclopedia. That project is not new, and is already very used…

So today I wanted to tell you about what you can do with wikipedia and Google earth / map: traveling.

I forgot to tell what are Google map and Google earth. The first is a website with maps and satellite photos of almost everywhere, the second is an application that allow you too navigate in a 3D environment over the world. If the two are very closed they are also really related.

If your are used of wikipedia you probably sow a link like: 43°36?43?N, 3°52?38?E
(this one come from this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montpellier). Those link lead to a page where you have a choice of application like Google map and when clicking on one of them you are redirected on it at the accurate coordinate point. So just by consulting your encyclopedia, you find the location and are able to view it with a satellite view…

Recently, I discover the opposite in Google earth: while navigating on an area, you get those small “puzzled star”, symbol of the encyclopedia. By clicking on it, you see information about the place you are overseeing. Here is an example on Paris:Well, I am sorry if you will spend all your time traveling on Internet…

A short title to said few words. But also to describe my last week-end :

A quick return travel to Marseilles, to give luck to Catherine who was attempting an exam. We did not really visit the town due to the lack of time… but we manage to run to the harbor: “Vieux Port” and to church: “Notre dame de la Garde”. Take a tour of those “Marseilles at night” photos.

Inventing cold water

This title comes while I got a client who asks itself why he is asking us to develop software that already exists in slightly different form. He probably does not remember the essential differences…

For myself, I just would like to know what is better: using existing free software or develop your own software which will be closest to your needs? I guess you have to decide according the case… and maybe the peoples.

As you know, I was developing (for my private use) a software to publish my photos. You can still see it at this address http://natphotos.free.fr, and on some friends web site who used it (JH, N). But as every personal development, it goes very slowly and don’t do all I expect it to do. Even if I am really proud of it, it is not good enough. Worth, I find a software which do it better and which is free to use! So I give up my project and announce you my last photos on my new photos space: http://picasaweb.google.com/zvezdafolk. I am not going to “invent cold water”, but rather to make my organisation suit with good existing tools.

I am sorry it is Google again… I now use those projects of the Mountain View company: GMail, Calendar, Reader, Blogger, Picasa, PicasaWeb, Groups, GTalk, Maps and Google obviously! It may mean that they make good job!

Last travel through Scotland, occasion to see a deer which ate in my hand! I went to Fort Williams and took the steam train of Harry Potter to Mallaig: plenty of beautiful landscape! I went to D place in Glenelg who show me his entire region so kindly (broch, forth, sky, dear, castle…). Again thank you D!

Then I took my plane to Lyon I reach in the afternoon which almost the same weather than in Edinburgh… The bad surprise was to arrive without my 30kg over-weighted bags: lost in Paris! I hope to have it tomorrow…

Orkney

I went last few day to Orkney.

As you can see I was in good company! We saw seals [phoques], seabirds [mouettes] and guillemots but no puffins [maquereux] as expected. We also visit some very old stones: a village and a standing stone circle from 5000 years ago.

I came back this morning in Aberdeen and I am already packing to go away… I am returning all my staffs which give to taught about the last 9 months in Scotland.
